The state was created when its capital city, George Town, was founded by the British in 1786. The old core of the city, home to European & Asian architectural influences, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Penang's multicultural populace includes substantial Eurasian, Peranakan & Siamese communities. Penang also boasts the highest GDP per capita of all Malaysian states, with George Town, Malaysia's second largest city, being regarded as the Silicon Valley of the East for its industries & as the financial centre of northern Malaysia.
Penang's anthem, Untuk Negeri Kita, was composed by James W. Boyle, a local Eurasian. The anthem was subsequently adopted in 1972. The current version of the anthem, played to a quicker tempo, has been in use since 1993.
