The Tun Mustapha Tower, formerly known as the Sabah Foundation Tower is a circular tower of steel and glass. It is a 30-storey building, located in the Likas Bay area or about 5 kilometers from the Kota Kinabalu city centre and is perceived as a Sabah icon.
This tower was named after Tun Datu Mustapha who was the first governor of Sabah and also the third Chief Minister from 1967 to 1975. The building has a central core with steel brackets supporting each floor. Being the only building in Asia with 72-sided polygon column-free floors, it is also the tallest building in Borneo.
The 122-metre tall Tun Mustapha Tower was built in 1977 by a Japanese builder, Mori Building Company. The 18th floor of this tower is a revolving floor, which spins 360 degrees to give a complete view of the Likas Harbour. This tower houses the Yayasan Sabah, a state sponsored foundation to promote education and economic development.
The Tun Mustapha Tower is the second tallest building in Sabah, after the Pusat Pentadbiran Negeri Sabah (Sabah State Administrative Building). The latter is a 132-metre, 33-storey tower officially opened in 2017. Both buildings are situated nearby about 10 minutes’ walk apart.
