Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5 or also known as just TT5 is a former tin mining dredge in the district of Kinta, Perak. This unique remnant is currently a dredge museum.
Tin dredges work by scooping up buckets of tin-bearing soil at the front end, then passes through an oscillating drum and a system of jigs and screens to extract the tin. Thereafter it spews out the waste material at the back end through a number of chutes.
TT5 was built in England in 1938 by FW Payne and Son, for the Southern Malayan Tin Dredging Ltd which was a company operating six dredges in total back in 1926. The dredge was in operation for 44 years until 1982 when the tin industry faced decline due to falling price of tin and high operating costs.
The Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 (TT5) weighs 4,500 tons, supported by a pontoon of 75 metres in length, 35 metres in width and 3 metres in depth. The museum operates daily from 8.30am to 6.00pm.
