Situated in the maze of terrace houses and shop houses, the pivotal building lies in the southwest of George Town, Penang. One might miss it but you can journey through an alley between two rows of 19th century terrace houses, bypass the opera stage and you can find the majestic structure in the courtyard.
The clan building consists of two levels, the main altar and ancestral hall on the top while a museum carrying the history of the Khoo clan lies on the lower level. The hall is adorned with beautiful and intricate carvings on pillars which are believed to be crafted by China’s master craftsmen. Also, the roofs are red in colour and slightly slopped. They bear carvings of popular Chinese legends of dragons, phoenix and other mythical creatures.
Khoo Kongsi together with 4 other clans: the Cheah, Yeoh, Lim and Tan kongsi make up the Five Big Clans (Goh Tai Seh) which formed the very backbone of early Penang Hokkien community.
