Istana Jahar Museum was once a royal residence, built by Sultan Muhammad II in 1887 for his grandson, Long Kundor Bendahara or Sultan Muhammad III. The construction of the palace was completed to perfection by Sultan Ahmad, after the demise of Sultan Muhammad II in 1886. Sultan Muhammad III resided at Istana Jahar when he succeeded his father, Sultan Ahmad in 1889.

The palace initially did not have a name. The name Istana Jahar was actually given by Sultan Muhammad IV in 1911. The palace was named after a floral plant in the gardens of the palace. Built by artisans, the palace showcases Kelantan’s elegant craftsmanship with luxurious woodcarvings and intricate woodwork. The palace also has a pentagon-shaped porch with a first floor balcony.

Istana Jahar was converted into the Kelantan Traditional Royal Ceremonies Museum in 1981. It holds exhibits of the history of the Kelantan Sultanate from the beginning till present. The displays in this museum are separated into various sections, such as weapons and traditional costumes of the royal family.

This palace which is steeped in history is a perfect example of Malay architectural heritage. It is well preserved and is not affected by developments around its area.
