Dayang Bunting Island or Pulau Dayang Bunting in Bahasa Malaysia literally means Island of the Pregnant Maiden. It is the second largest island out of Langkawi’s cluster of ninety-nine islands. It is also a popular spot for tourists.

The Dayang Bunting Lake on Dayang Bunting Island is a fresh water lake. Its surrounding area is part of the Dayang Bunting Marble Geoforest Park, one of the three geoparks in Langkawi, with immense limestone formations, marbles and unique geological features.

From a certain angle, if you look carefully, you will find the hills that form the outline of the lake resembles a woman lying on her back with her protruding belly with that of a pregnant woman.

Legend has it that a man named Mat Teja fell in love with the princess, Mambang Sari and together they had a son. The baby did not live long and died mysteriously after seven days. Mambang Sari then decided to lay the baby in the water of the lake. She also blessed all women having difficulty in conceiving a child.

Local womenfolk believe that they will become fertile once they take a dip into the waters of Dayang Bunting Lake on Dayang Bunting Island.
