Beris Lake is a large man-made lake in the Sik district of Kedah. It was formed in August 2000 as a result of the Beris dam construction. There are two main functions of the dam. One, to regulate flows in Muda River to augment water available for paddy irrigation and upland crops. Another is to supply water needs to the states of Kedah, Perlis and Penang island.
It is also interesting to note that Beris Lake is the largest grape producer in Southeast Asia. Grape planting was introduced in Kedah in 2007 with assistance from Thai expertise. Grape plants are sensitive to the environment and moisture.
Started with 1,000 seedlings on a 1.6-hectare site, the vineyard has expanded to 12 hectares, with 13,000 grape plants of the Black Opal, Black Grape, Loose Pelite and White Malaga species.
It is an educational tourism site as visitors get to explore and learn about grapes growing process from planting to harvesting. Visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of unique flavours of grapes. They can savour the fresh, big, crunchy and juicy grapes on site.
