Join author Somnath Batabyal and Fong Min Hun on Tuesday, 16 September 2025 at Lit Books@CzipLee, to discuss Batabyal’s novel, Red River, a fascinating study on the impact of the Assam separatist movement in the 1980s and 1990s.
Batabyal, a former investigative journalist, interrogates identity, otherness and violence, political and otherwise, in this engrossing tale that follows the lives of three families across two generations. Through these lives, Batabyal reveals the insidious and corrosive nature of identity politics and the inevitable heartbreak that comes with it. The text skillfully weaves together the complex threads of history: the Bangladesh Liberation War, the ensuing refugee crisis, the rise of insurgency with its foreign ties, the devastating impact of the Armed Forces Act of 1953, and the shifting North-Eastern economy. Much like the Brahmaputra—the very "red river" of its name—this narrative links the destinies of the families caught within its current.
Tickets are RM10, and attendees will receive a voucher to redeem on the event day.
