As Jesus rode a donkey into the town of Jerusalem a large crowd gathered and laid palm branches and their cloaks across the road, giving Jesus a royal treatment. The hundreds of people shouted "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"

A donkey was used instead of a horse as it represents the humble arrival of Christ in peace.

It is called Palm Sunday because it is when the faithful receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the re-enactment of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. Palm branches are recognized as a symbol of peace and victory.

On this day, Christians also remember Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, praise God for the gift of salvation, and look expectantly to the Lord's second coming.

Many churches, including Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Anglican and the Eastern Orthodox distribute palm branches to the congregation on Palm Sunday for the customary observances. These observances include a reading of the account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the carrying and waving of palm branches in processions, the blessing of palms, the singing of traditional hymns and the making of small crosses with palm fronds.
