One outstanding and a pioneer nurse was Florence Nightingale. The foundational philosopher of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale was born in 1820. She was a British nurse, who was also known as “The Lady with the Lamp”. The International Nurses Day was established in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to commemorate her birth and to highlight the importance of nurses’ role in the health care industry.

Why was she known as “The Lady with the Lamp”?

Florence Nightingale truly cared for her suffering patients. At night, when everyone was asleep, she would visit the soldiers to make sure they were comfortable. She would also write letters home for those who could not write themselves. Since Florence carried a lantern with her on her night visits, so the soldiers called her ‘The Lady with the Lamp’.
