Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a major religious celebration for the Muslim community in Malaysia and around the world. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is also commonly known as Hari Raya Puasa. In Bahasa Malaysia, “Hari Raya” means ‘A Great Day’. “Puasa” means ‘fasting or abstention’ in Sanskrit. Men perform prayers at the mosque while children ask for forgiveness from their parents. The little ones will also be given ‘duit raya’ or gifts of money in small green packets. While the first three days of Hari Raya are usually reserved for catching up with the family, many families hold open houses throughout the month where friends and neighbors of other races are invited to share conversation, laughter and a variety of traditional delicacies and snacks.

Ketupat is one of the must-haves on Hari Raya. Ketupat is a dish made from rice or glutinous rice wrapped in woven coconut leaves into a diamond shape which is then steamed.

Ketupat tastes bland therefore it is usually paired with serunding (dry coconut fried with chili) or rendang (either beef or chicken cooked with coconut milk and spices).
Lemang is another must-have delicacy for the Muslims during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It is a traditional food made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and salt. To make lemang, the bamboo sticks need to be hollowed out. Then they are lined with banana leaves and filled with the ingredients. The sticks are leaned against a makeshift horizontal pole near a fire to cook.
