Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. It is an alternate name for Holy Thursday. Christians believe that it is the day Jesus celebrated his final Passover to His disciples. At the Passover meal, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, which was most notably a display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other. Jesus’ ‘mandate’ is commemorated on Maundy Thursday. Maundy is the shortened form of mandatum (in Latin) which means command. This is the reason why services on Maundy Thursday generally include the washing of feet or other act of physical care as an integral part of the celebration. Maundy Thursday is also the Thursday of Jesus’ final week before he was crucified.
