History
Father’s Day celebration originated from the USA. A West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event in July 1908 to honour fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of 362 men who died in the previous December’s explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah. It was only a commemoration and not an annual holiday.
In 1909, Washington, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd who is one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official day equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea.

The widely publicized events then struck a chord that led the way to put the idea on the path to becoming a national holiday. However, the holiday did not catch on right away, perhaps due to the perceived parallels with Mother’s Day.
In 1913, the US Congress officially designated the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. However, it was only in 1972, when Father’s Day celebration was formally acknowledged by President Richard Nixon under the Congressional Act and permanently enforced on the third Sunday of June throughout the United States.
What is father’s day about and when is it celebrated?
Similar to the celebration of Mother’s Day, Father’s Day is also celebrated on different days in different countries. Father’s Day is observed on the first Sunday of September in Australia and New Zealand and second Sunday of August in Brazil. In Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on the late King Bhumipol Adulyadej’s birthday on December 5. In Malaysia, we emulate the US and celebrate Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June.
