The Chinese New Year’s Eve is important as all family members gather for a feast and reunion.

Have you been to Penang’s Snake Temple? You don’t need to travel as you can pick ecards on this particular temple under the Chor Soo Kong’s birthday ecards. Hock Hin Keong or more popularly known as Ban Ka Lan Snake Temple in Bayan Lepas is dedicated to the deity Cheng Chooi Chor Soo Kong. The deity’s birthday falls on the 6th day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar.

Every year, on the eve of the deity’s birthday, there is a Chnea Hoay (flame-watching) ceremony to predict the economy of the new year. We even have ecards for this event!

Do you crave for something sweet now and then? The traditional ‘nian gao’ or ‘thnee kuih’ is popular during Chinese New Year as a snack and used as treats to be offered to the Kitchen God. The Kitchen God Festival is when the deity is believed to ascend to heaven annually to report to the Jade Emperor. Hence sweet treats for sweet report.

The Jade Emperor's Birthday, also known as the Hokkien New Year falls on the 9th day of the 1st Chinese lunar month. The Jade Emperor is the emperor of heaven and it is usually celebrated in grandeur and takes place at midnight. In Hokkien dialect, it refers to Thnee Kong Seh” or “Pai Thnee Kong”.

One more interesting festival is the Laba festival where congee is consumed. The congee consists of glutinous rice, red beans, millets, peas, dried red dates, dried lotus seeds, chestnuts and walnuts boiled in sugar. People believe that eating Laba congee will bring good luck for the new year.
