KL City Opera presents RAVEL 150 at the Nero Event Space, PJ Performing Arts Centre, on 15 & 16 November 2025 with performances at 3 PM and 8:30 PM. This special concert celebrates the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel - a French composer, pianist and conductor who became renowned for his masterful craftsmanship, clarity of style, and shimmering orchestral colour. Ravel trained at the Paris Conservatoire, yet his experimental voice and affinity for Impressionism, Neoclassicism, and Spanish influences firmly established him as a leading modern composer.
The first half shines with a dazzling four-hands piano recital by gifted Malaysian pianist Celestine Yoong and award-winning Thai-born virtuoso Harit Chunhanantasap, as they bring to life two of Ravel’s most enchanting works: Rapsodie espagnole (1907–08), a four‑movement orchestral rhapsody steeped in Spanish flair—featuring luminous nocturnal textures, a spirited Malagueña, a sultry Habanera, and a vibrant Feria—and Ma mère l’Oye (“Mother Goose”), originally a 1908 piano duet later orchestrated into a ballet, which offers five dreamy, childhood‑inspired tableaux—Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, The Green Serpent, Beauty and the Beast, and a shimmering Enchanted Garden finale—enhanced by projected animation for a truly magical experience
The second half presents Ravel’s imaginative children’s opera L’enfant et les Sortilèges (1925), with a libretto by Colette. In this one-act lyrical fantasy, a spoiled boy’s destructive tantrum—hurting a squirrel, smashing toys, tearing wallpaper - awakens his environment as talking furniture, animals, and objects magically come to life to confront him. As he faces their accusations, he experiences remorse and compassion.
